Counting to 20 is a big step after counting to 10. The numbers from 11 to 20 follow new patterns, and children also have to link each digit to the right number word. On this free worksheet each page has a row of ten numbers repeated on ten lines, so your child traces every number ten times.
Page 1 covers 1 to 10 and page 2 covers 11 to 20. Use the Previous and Next buttons under the preview to flip through the pages before you print. The PDF you download includes both pages. If you also want the number words, change Layout to One number per line and turn on Show number words.
Eleven and twelve don’t follow any pattern, so children simply have to learn them. From thirteen to nineteen most words end in -teen, but the sounds come in the opposite order to the digits: in 14 the 4 is written last yet heard first, as in four-teen. Tracing each number again and again helps the shapes of the digits stick.
Lay out 20 buttons or blocks in two rows of ten and count them as you trace. Write the numbers on cards, shuffle them and put them back in order. Count up to 20 and then back down for a rocket countdown. One page a day is plenty, and children enjoy colouring the star at the end of each line.
Set To to 10 in the Counting Range box to make a single easy page. When your child is confident, move on to counting 1 to 100 or practise the words on their own with number words worksheets.
